African Folklore, as an art, combines beauty and goodness to uplift the society to
a plateau where both the young and the old will recognize what is good and what is
evil. The African culture serves as a guideline to the society. It is the core of
African music and tradition. It is also the society's history and ancestry. It includes
the stories, riddles and proverbs, and the music and dances that contribute to the
social makeup. A story can end either happily or tragically, but the people learn
from it so they can enlarge on its beauty and goodness and avoid repeating the evil
experience.
Folklore enhances the individual's growth. The African knows that his culture is
great, but, still, it is up to the people to make a good society. This is the beauty
of folklore. African folklore teaches the African how to see goodnesss and how to
enlarge on that goodness. It teaches the African how to respect the Supreme God and
the ancestors. It teaches the African how to free himself from corruption, greed,
and envy. The African folklore teaches the African how to respect nature and how
to live on a spiritual level with all human beings.
